How StrangeBird addresses neurodiverse brains

One of the neuronormative benefits of massage is relaxation.
So why is it that those of us who identify as neurodiverse are often terrified of the thought of scheduling a massage?

The answer can be found in the question. “How does relaxation happen?”
Hint: It’s not candles and questionable music. We have to look at what happens on a systemic level.

What is relaxation?

Relaxation is the activation of the parasympathetic system. The parasympathetic system is the opposite of “flight or fight”; it is the “rest and digest” system. Neurotypical folks have something like an equation that activates their parasympathetic system: Lowered lights, gentle music, and something lavender scented is often a good starting point.

This equation doesn’t work for those with neurodivergence because they often deal with hyposensitivity or hypersensitivity.

Things that indicate you might be hyposensitive:

  • Listening to loud music

  • Craving fizzy drinks

  • Seeking extreme temperature

  • Seeking extreme pressure

  • Seeking extreme flavors

Things that indicate you might be hypersensitive:

  • Feeling overwhelmed with loud noises

  • Feeling overwhelmed by bright lights

  • Feeling overwhelmed by an unknown environment

  • Feeling overwhelmed by strong smells

  • Feeling overwhelmed by the feel of certain fabrics or sensations

And this isn’t an all or nothing situation!

A neurodivergent brain might respond to a mix of hypo and hypersensitive input (loving loud music and deep pressure but despise strong smells, even those that are generally considered “calming”). Add the multiple vulnerabilities inherent to any massage session (being undressed in front of a stranger, the thought of an unknown person touching them, etc.) and it’s easy to see how a massage is a potential sensory minefield for the neurodiverse.

StrangeBird Bodywork wants to be a place that acknowledges your individual needs. While we continuously work to be inclusive for everyone, if you choose to self-identify as neurodiverse on your intake form, we will have a conversation about how to best accommodate you
